Syntax Class Fall 2008

How can we use TypeCraft

Department of Languages and Communication Studies

Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway

TypeCraft provides an interface for morpho-syntactic analysis which can be used by all participants in the class, and a wiki forum where we can explain, question and discuss proposals by ourselves and others. The present page serves as a forum. A typical exchange may be: An example does not quite fit the annotation principles we have so far looked at. To present the case, you show the annotation and explain where the problem is. You or others in the group may have suggestions as to how this should be dealt with, and you can conduct a discussion like on any other wiki page.

Technically, there are two steps to be performed: 1. Making an annotation. 2. Placing the annotation on this page.

For instructions, click on 'How-To-TypeCraft' on the menu right to the left of this page.

For example, you have seen on the Gloss menu that one can annotate a word as 'subject' or 'object'; but when the word is a compound, in which of its parts would one put the tag? So you annotate and glue in the following example, and invite a discussion/quest how to do a 'subject' annotation for such a case.

Another example. In class, we figured that for derivational affixes, we may want to say both what they mean and which word class they derive from which. For instance, in ubehjelpeligheten, we may want to say that be makes a verb from a verb, that lig makes an adjective from a verb and means 'possible', that u makes an adjective from an adjective and means 'opposite of', and het a noun from an adjective. In the gloss line we could use these labels: V>V, V>A, A>A, A>N - - and similarly for all conceivable transitions.

A full view would be, without these new derivational markings:

and in this discussion, we hereby suggest to the system that the new labels be sanctioned.

TypeCraft has now 8 tags indicating derivation:

Adjectival Base Nominal Base Verbal Base Numeral Base
ADJ > ADV N > ADJ V > ADJ NUM > ADJ
ADJ > N N > V V > N
ADJ > V
